Backlit vs. Non-Backlit Trade Show Displays: Which Fits Your Booth?

Walk through almost any busy trade show and you'll probably notice more booths lighting up from within.

A backlit trade show display uses integrated LED lighting to illuminate a printed fabric graphic from within the display, creating a bright backdrop, banner, counter, or other display element. Non-backlit displays rely on venue lighting or optional external lights instead.

Both can create a strong booth. The better choice depends on your space, budget, setup needs, and how much visual impact you want.

So, is backlit worth the upgrade? Here's how the two compare.

The biggest difference is simple: backlit displays make lighting part of the display itself.

That can be a major advantage, but it doesn't mean every booth needs it.

1. Think About How Much Attention You Need

Trade show floors are crowded with graphics, signage, screens, and competing brands.

A backlit trade show booth can help create a stronger focal point by illuminating the graphic from within. Backlit SEG displays also create a clean, edge-to-edge look that works especially well with colorful graphics, photography, and modern booth designs.

Backlighting may be worth considering if you're exhibiting at a large show, want more visibility from the aisle, or simply want a more polished, illuminated look.

At a smaller conference or networking event, a clean tension fabric or pop-up display may already give you everything you need.

2. Match the Display to Your Booth Size

You don't need a huge exhibit to use an LED backlit trade show display.

10x10 Booths

A 10x10 backlit trade show display can turn one wall into the main visual focus without overcrowding the booth.

For example, the Lumos 10'W x 8'H Flat Backlit Display creates a full illuminated backdrop while keeping the rest of the space open.

If you don’t want the entire booth to be backlit, you can also start with a non-backlit backdrop like the Tru-Fit 3.0 and add one illuminated element, such as a Lumos Backlit Banner Stand or Lumos Ion Counter, for extra visibility.

That gives you some of the impact of a backlit booth without requiring every display element to be illuminated.

10x20 Booths

A larger booth gives you more flexibility.

You could use a 10x20 backlit trade show display as the main feature, or build around a non-backlit backdrop and add illuminated accents where they’ll have the most impact.

If you’re starting with a non-backlit setup, adding one or two backlit elements can give the booth a brighter focal point while keeping the rest of the display simple. For example, any display can be paired with Lumos counters, Lumos Backlit Banner Stands, or a Lumos Skyscraper to create extra visibility without making every part of the booth backlit.

You don’t have to light every part of the booth to make backlighting effective.

3. Consider Setup, Power, and Budget

One practical difference between backlit vs. non-backlit trade show displays is electricity.

A standard fabric backdrop typically doesn't require power. A backlit display does, so you'll need to plan for electrical service and cord placement at the show.

Backlit systems can also include more components and usually cost more upfront. That investment may make sense for exhibitors attending multiple major shows, while a simpler non-backlit display may be a better fit for smaller events or tighter budgets.

4. Design With Backlighting in Mind

Backlit graphics behave differently than standard printed graphics because light passes through the fabric.

Bright colors, photography, and gradients can look especially strong when illuminated, while very dark colors may appear more muted.

If you're designing a backlit SEG display, you should create the artwork specifically for backlighting rather than simply reusing an existing non-backlit graphic.

Follow these guidelines for designing for backlit displays to ensure your graphics align with your branding, and follow the requirements for this display type.

You Don't Have to Backlight the Entire Booth

Backlighting doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing choice.

A Lumos Backlit Banner Stand or a Lumos Ion Backlit Counter can add extra impact without converting the entire booth to backlit displays.

This can be a practical middle ground if you want the look of an LED trade show booth while keeping the rest of your setup simple. Although, that’s not to say there aren’t appropriate uses for a fully backlit exhibit!

Which Option Fits Your Booth?

Choose backlit when visibility and visual impact are priorities. Choose non-backlit when simplicity, portability, or budget matter more.

And if you fall somewhere in between, adding one illuminated element can give your booth extra impact without overcomplicating the setup.
